AMCU rent by internal division: report

[miningmx.com] – DOUBTS have been raised about the ability of the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) to carry out strikes at the platinum and gold mines on Thursday owing to internal divisions in the union.

BDLive published an article in which it claimed some AMCU members had lost faith in AMCU’s leadership, headed by president Joseph Mathunjwa, which they believed was corrupt and dictatorial.

Mathunjwa has hit back at criticisms accusing some members of the union of “having tea with [President Jacob Zuma]”.

BDLive said these fresh rumblings follow a similar claim earlier this month from AMCU chairman at Amplats’ Thembelani mine, Thebe Maswabi who called radio station Metro FM saying workers were organising to form a new union because Amcu’s leadership was “corrupt”.

Former AMCU leader and shop steward at Implats, Vuyo Maqanda, said there had been a lack of democratic consultation with members. “Shaft committee members had voted (in favour of the strike), but they were protecting their own jobs,” he told a briefing attended by BDLive.
