[miningmx.com] – ANGLO American Platinum (Amplats) said a sit-in of 2,300 employees at its Dishaba mine in Rustenburg had been ended following negotiations with majority union, the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU).
The sit-in, which was started on Saturday morning and ended on Sunday evening, was organised to dispute the suspension of an AMCU shop steward following a breach of safety rules. There had been no loss of production as the sit-in had occurred during a “make safe” shift following a Section 54 notice that had been served on the mine, Amplats said.
Chris Griffith, CEO of Amplats, promised strong action: “We will not negotiate with employees engaged in illegal activity especially behaviour and activity that endangers the lives of their fellow workers.
“Strong action will be taken against those who instigate this type of behaviour and activity’.
Employees will return to production tonight (Monday).
