Rescue starts for trapped illegal miners

[miningmx.com] – THE rescue of illegal miners trapped underground in an abandoned mine in Benoni, east of Johannesburg, has begun, said Bloomberg News, but it was unclear how many miners had actually been trapped.

Emergency Rescue 24 said rescue teams had struggled for eight hours moving boulders blocking the entrance of the mine.

“Several miners have been brought to surface,’ the emergency service said in a statement on its website today. “They are escorted to the medical station where they are checked for injuries.’

“It still remains unclear if there is any truth in what the miners have told rescuers that several others are trapped in a separate section of the mine,’ the emergency service said. Rescue workers will search for other miners.
