Tariff uncertainty driving Bayside closure

[miningmx.com] – UNCERTAINTY regarding the sustainability of an electricity tariff was probably driving BHP Billiton’s decision to shut the Bayside aluminium smelter, said BDlive.

BDLive quoted Mike Rossouw, chairman of the Energy Intensive User Group of Southern Africa, to have said: “As far as I know, no final decision has been made yet. I am sure it’s no secret that the uncertainty of the contracted electricity price agreement is what is driving this”.

BHP Billiton receives a deep discount for electricity it uses – about 160MW – at the Bayside smelter when the aluminium price is low – a historic contract that Eskom said it wants to renegotiate.
