More defects at Eskom’s Medupi

[miningmx.com] – MORE defects have been discovered in the construction of boilers at Eskom’s 4,750MW Medupi power installation, said BDLive citing comments from Hitachi Power. The defects were not expected to delay the commissioning of Medupi’s first boiler, however.

Chief operating officer of Hitachi Power Africa, Tom Brown, told BDLive the defects, which had been committed by one of Hitachi Power Africa’s sub-contractors, had been detected during a routine check.

The new welding defects follow the discovery last December that about 9,000 welds were not heat-treated as they should have been and others were defective. The defects contributed to a six-month delay in the completion of Medupi’s first unit, said BDLive.
