
[miningmx.com] – ESKOM CEO, Brian Dames, has again raised the prospect that gas could provide a solution to South Africa’s future power requirements.
In a letter to BDLive, Dames said: “If South Africa wants to pursue a large gas strategy (shale gas), then this may displace other technologies,” in a reference to the potential for gas to replace nuclear power.
Dames comments come amid plans by South Africa to build a third major coal-fired power station, known as Coal 3. The size and capital scope of Coal 3 has yet to be decided, however.
