SA should import gas from Mozi, Angola

[miningmx.com] – IT was prefererable to import gas from Mozambique and Angola rather than to build expensive nuclear power facilities, said BDLive citing comments by the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

“This means borrowing enormous sums of money to finance nuclear builds. Eskom is already in financial trouble because it has too much debt,” said chamber president Janine Myburgh.

“Adding to the debt bundle will not help and with the country’s credit rating on the slide, financing nuclear power would be almost impossible,” she said.

Chairman of the chamber’s industrial focus portfolio committee, Peter Haylett, said that buying in gas from neighbouring states would also help keep money within the region until the country’s own gas resources could be tapped.
