[miningmx.com] – THE Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) criticised Lonmin for dismissing 235 workers employed in the essential services category after they failed to show for work.
Lonmin argues that the workers were not entitled to participate in the strike called by the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union, now in its 18th week in terms of a recognition agreement with the union.
However, Cosatu North West secretary, Solly Phetoe, told Sapa: “The mine bosses care about profit and do not care about the safety of workers who are not able to go to work.
“We call on the management of Lonmin to reinstate those workers or we will take the matter to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration (CCMA) on behalf of those workers who are not organised in any union,’ Phetoe said.
