Shale won’t repeat mining mistakes, says ANC

[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa would make sure communities benefit from shale gas and oil production and would avoid the mistakes committed by the country’s mining sector, said Bloomberg News citing ANC treasurer, Zweli Mkhize.

“Gas will be a serious game-changer, oil will be a serious game-changer,’ Mkhize told the newswire service. “I certainly hope if we were to get to that point we are able to get there under conditions that will not give us the same outcome as the previous mining operations,’ he said.

In terms of amendments to the Minerals & Petroleum Resources Development Act, the South African government can insist on a 20% free-carry in gas and oil projects, a development that Exxon Mobil Corp. and Total SA said would deter investment.
