SA needs to spend $1bn for potable water

[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa had to spend as much as $1bn to convert toxic mine water to potable supplies, said Bloomberg News citing the country’s Department of Water Affairs.

Marius Keet, acting chief director of the department’s Gauteng office, told the newswire that the cost of the conversion would mostly fall on consumers with government funding the balance.

The estimated spending of R9bn rand ($863m) to R10bn would “… make available 150 million liters (40 million gallons) per day, which is potable-quality standard, and it will also reduce the water we’re currently using from Lesotho,’ said Keet.
