Mathunjwa draws line in sand at Amplats

[miningmx.com] – JOSEPH Mathunjwa’s Associated Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) said it would pursue every avenue open to it in terms of the law in an effort to oppose Anglo American Platinum’s (Amplats’) restructuring plans.

In a report by BDLive, Mathunjwa said one job lost was one too many and added that his union had been sidelined in discussions with Amplats. This was despite Amcu now forming the major union on South Africa’s platinum mines.

The militant union’s opposition will raise the stakes for the Amplats plan, which could be caught in the crossfire of inter-union rivalry, said BDLive.

Amplats announced last week that it had revised its restructuring plans lowering the number of affected jobs at its Rustenburg mine to 6,000 from 14,000 previously, and platinum output would be cut by just 50,000 ounces a year over time.
