Govt to establish precious metals committee

[miningmx.com] – THE South African government is to establish a high profile committee aimed at calming tensions ahead of wage negotiations in the gold and platinum sectors, City Press reported, citing mines minister, Susan Shabangu.

The committee, the fruits of a meeting between Shabangu and the Chamber of Mines of SA on Friday (May 24), would include the director-generals of the mineral resources and national treasury, Thibedi Ramontja and Lungisa Fuzile respectively. It would also consist of leading CEOs in the platinum and gold sectors.

“We spoke for a long time about the effect that signs of instability in the mining industry are having on the exchange rate,’ Shabangu told City Press on Friday.

It is also expected that deputy ANC president, Kgalema Motlanthe, would meet with the National Union of Mineworkers and its rival, the Associated Mineworkers & Construction Union ahead of the wage negotiations.
