Gemfields hoping to resume offshore auction

[miningmx.com] – GEMFIELDS, the world’s biggest emerald producer, said it hoped to resume offshore auctions despite objections from Zambia where it mines that all stones have to be sold within the southern Africa country.

Speaking to Bloomberg News, Sean Gilbertson, a director of Gemfields, said: “We do not believe that there is any law that makes it illegal to hold an auction offshore.
“We are literally in the process now of working on that export process and I hope we get that export sorted out imminently.’

Zambia’s mines, energy and water development minister, Yamfwa Mukanga, told Bloomberg News on June 1 that his government had blocked Gemfields from exporting the emeralds last week.
