Amplats wildcat strike at an end

[miningmx.com] – THE wildcat strike at the Thembelani and Khuseleka mines owned by Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) is over but there is confusion as to whether the cause of the strike had been solved.

The Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) called the strike because demands that 19 suspended shop stewards be reinstated had not been met by Amplats. The shop stewards were suspended after staging an underground sit-in last month.

Speaking to Sapa, AMCU president, Joseph Mathunjwa, said: “Yes they have reported for duty today [Tuesday]. The branch leadership was allowed to report to work as they were suspended last week Friday”.

However, Amplats spokesperson, Bongeka Lwana, said she was uncertain whether the shop stewards were back at work.

Some 5,600 workers downed tools on Sunday (July 7) night at the Amplats mines, a development that gave wings to the platinum price.
