NUM to call indaba before wage talks begin

[miningmx.com] – THE National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) wanted to call a pre-bargaining indaba that would include other unions as well as employers and stakeholders in an effort to avoid share price weakness during this winter’s wage negotiations, BDLive reported.

Citing Frans Baleni, secretary-general of the NUM, BDLive said the NUM wanted a “peaceful and mature” bargaining process.

The call for an indaba was further evidence the South African government was interested in avoiding the calamatous events that took place at Lonmin’s Marikana mine in which 35 miners were shot in one day by police services.

“This is so the collective bargaining process doesn’t result in negotiations that lead to share prices of companies going down and to ensure there is stability,” Baleni said.

“We also need to decide what to do about people who do not play the game according to the rules and whether it is correct to engage with them.”
