Medupi start-up to make little difference

[miningmx.com] – THE commissioning of Eskom’s Medupi power station would do little to ameliorate South Africa’s power deficit owing to lack of maintenance on the utility’s existing fleet, said BDLive.

Citing an internal report by Eskom, BDLive said lack of maintenance on the fleet had driven down the availability of power from 80% to 75% in a year – well below the 90% availability that is recommended internationally.

“Even though Eskom has brought in more capacity, by returning mothballed stations to service, the total availability of their plant is less than when they started doing that,” energy analyst, Chris Yelland, told BDLive.
