Debswana to install crime-beating X-rays

[miningmx.com] – DEBSWANA, a joint venture between the Botswana government and De Beers, is to install 10 full-body X-ray machines at four mines in the southern African country to combat theft of gems, said Bloomberg News.

Citing a notice published by De Beers today, Bloomberg News said theft of diamonds from Botswana’s mines was on the radar following the shift of De Beers’ diamond trading operations to Botswana, a move that had the potential to attract “sophisticated criminal syndicates”.

De Beers, which is 85% owned by Anglo American, was a stand-out performer for the UK-listed mining group which represents about a quarter of its value, according to a report by Macquarie Research last year.
