SA steel industry in job crisis talks

[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa’s steel industry is to meet with unions in which the issue of looming retrenchments will be discussed in the under pressure sector, said BDLive citing the National Union of Metalworkers (Numsa).

Some 5,000 jobs were at stake in the sector in the next three months, Numsa spokesman, Castro Ngobese, told BDlive on Tuesday. “No country in the world could tolerate the high levels of retrenchments and unemployment without there being a revolt,” said Ngobese.

The meeting will involve the CEOs of ArcelorMittal SA, Evraz Highveld Steel, a company currently in business rescue, Scaw Metals Group and Macsteel. The Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of SA, will also be part of the meeting, said BDLive.
