[miningmx.com] – THE arrest of the mine manager and smelter manager at west Rand gold mine Blyvooruitzicht (Blyvoor) raised the spectre the mine, which is in liquidation proceedings, may go the way of the Grootvlei mine which was owned by Aurora Empowerment Systems, said BDLive in a report on Monday.
The publication reported that the mine managers at Blyvoor had been arrested amid alleged theft of some 1.3kg of gold which would have fetched R500,000 at today’s gold price. The liquidator, Leigh Roering, had accepted a R70m bid from Goldrich, a company run by the controversial directors of the failed Aurora mining company, said BDLive.
Goldrich directors Thulani Ngubane and his adviser, Faizel Bhana, denied they were involved in asset stripping Blyvoor. “We categorically deny any such allegations, and repudiate same with the contempt it deserves,’ they told BDLive.
Grootvlei was closed under the watch of Aurora with mine shaft equipment and plant taken from the premises and sold. Illegal gold mining was also rife at the mine with a number of fatalities as illegal miners and security services clashed.
