[miningmx.com] – THE Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) had cut wage demands at Impala Platinum (Implats) where it is the majority union by 31%, said Bloomberg News citing Johan Theron, spokesperson for Implats.
“We are closer, but still far from one another,’ Theron told the news agency. “The parties undertook to consult with their principals and meet again,’ he said.
The wage demand cut means that AMCU is now asking for a basic salary for entry-level workers of R8,668 per month compared to its R12,500 per month demand which it had held for several months.
Impala has increased the offer to the lowest-paid below-surface miners by 0.5 of a percentage point to 8.5% for the first year of the three-year deal, Theron said. They currently earn R5,500 per month, said Bloomberg News.
