Fuel cells could spur platinum demand

[miningmx.com] – PLATINUM demand may be given a boost by fuel cells used in generating electricity for remote rural areas, said Bloomberg News citing the efforts of Anglo American Platinum and partner, Ballard Power Systems.

The companies are using the unique properties of platinum to combine with hydrogen in fuel cells in order to electrify remote villages, said the newswire. The companies are hoping that developing a fresh industrial use will improve the demand prospects for the metal.

“If you’re looking for reasons to be positive about platinum, then the uptake in demand for fuel cells is definitely something to be shouting about,’ Michael Kavanagh, an analyst at Noah Capital Markets told the newswire service.
