Naive to hope CEOs will openly criticise Govt.

[miningmx.com] – Bernard Swanepoel, chairman of Village Main Reef, said it was ‘naive’ to hope that business leaders could openly criticise the South African government as it may cost their companies.

“The CEO has to explain to his board [and] shareholders how that public comment has cost them, say, X amount. In a highly legislated world, the legislator wields huge power, and I think we are naive to expect a CEO to publicly say what he thinks,’ he said.

Swanepoel said “it’s still easier to fly in a CEO or fund manager from London to come and talk the truth’. He was speaking to Business Times, a weekly newspaper.
“I’m not too sure that, right now, the government is open for criticism,’ Swanepoel said in the interview.
