KCM imports first copper from Chile

[miningmx.com] – KONKOLA Copper Mines (KCM), the Zambia mining company owned by India’s Vedanta Resources, improved its first semi-processed copper from Chile to keep its Nchanga smelter operating at full capacity, said Reuters.

KCM bought 5,000 tonnes of copper concentrates from Chilean state-run firm Codelco and will smelt the semi-processed material at the Nchanga smelter, which has an annual production capacity of 311,000 tonnes, said Reuters citing Shapi Shachinda, spokesman for KCM.

“The concentrates mineralogy is suitable for blending with KCM’s own concentrates and other third-party concentrates,” he told Reuters. “Further Chilean imports will depend on the successful outcome of the trial run with the current imported concentrates,” he added.
