
[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa was heading for a repeat of the Marikana massacre unless mineworker living conditions were improved, said BDLive citing comments by former general secretary of the Congress of South African Trade Unions Zwelinzima Vavi.
“A new commission must be established to look at living and working conditions of miners to prevent a Marikana massacre from happening again,” he said during a debate about the findings by a commission investigating the event when 34 miners were shot dead on August 16, 2012 during a mine protest at Lonmin.
Last week, President Jacob Zuma released a report that recommended police commissioner Riah Phiyega’s competence to hold office be investigated.
“Until the economic conditions in this country are addressed, there will be another Marikana,” Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union leader Joseph Mathunjwasaid at the same event.
