De Beers rejects NUM claims of racism

[miningmx.com] – DE BEERS rejected accusations of racism by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) which added that the diamond producer had deliberately targeted its shop stewards when its issued notice of restructuring to 189 employees at the corporate offices in Johannesburg and Kimberley and Venetia mine.

“Accusations of racism are completely untrue and utterly offensive,” said De Beers in a statement. “It is not true that black employees alone are affected and received S189 [Section 189 (S189) notices],” it added.

De Beers said the eventual number of job cuts may be reduced to 68 through natural attrition such as retirement and the redeployment of people. It had cut capital expenditure and sustaining capital before turning to restructuring, it said.
