Lonmin fails to strike deal with Amcu

[miningmx.com] – LONMIN said it had failed to strike a deal with the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (Amcu) following ‘marathon talks’ on Wednesday, Reuters reported citing a platinum firm spokesperson.

No further talks were scheduled for Thursday paving the way for a strike, although officials from Amcu could not be reached for comment, said Reuters. Lonmin has said a strike would be illegal.

AMCU wants to be recognised as the majority union at Lonmin as it now represents more than 70% of the workforce at the world’s third-largest producer of the precious metal.

South African deputy president, Kgalema Motlanthe, is to meet players in the mining sector on Friday in a bid to resolve simmering tension over its labour regime, said Reuters.
