Coal output not disrupted at Exxaro’s Grootegeluk after fire

EXXARO Resources said coal production at the Grootegeluk mine in South Africa’s Limpopo province was not disrupted by a fire at the mine’s reductants plant last week.

The fire was brought under control with assistance from fire units from both Matimba and Medupi Power Stations, the company said in a statement. “The cause of the fire is under investigation by both the Department of Mineral Resources, and the operation’s multi-disciplinary team consisting of safety and health and engineering specialists.

Commenting on the incident, executive head of stakeholder affairs, Mzila Mthenjane said: “The safety of our employees is our number one priority and we are pleased that there were no injuries to employees from the accident”. Grootegeluk supplies coal to Eskom’s Medupi power station as well as grades of export quality coal.
