Mineworker killed in fall of ground at Harmony’s Kusasalethu

HARMONY Gold said a mineworker had died following a fall of ground at the group’s Kusasalethu mine in Carletonville earlier today. “An investigatoni into the accident is underway,” it said in a statement to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

The National Union of Mineworkers issued a statement saying that 45 mineworkers had died this year alone in mining-related deaths across the country. “That is highly unacceptable,” it added.

Mineworker deaths has special prevalence this year – more than usual – following a series of fatal accidents at the gold mining premises of Sibanye-Stillwater. Of some 21 miners killed at the company this year, 19 are from the gold division, leading to calls from Parliament for government intervention.

On May 17, an employee at Harmony’s Moab Khotsong died in an underground mining accident. Harmony has recently bought the North West province mine from AngloGold Ashanti. The fatality occurred in a shaft ore pass incident, it said.
