Protests disrupt Amplats’ Mogalakwena mine

[miningmx.com] – ANGLO American Platinum’s (Amplats’) Mogalakwena mine was operating on a skeleton staff after protests by the local community disrupted attendance, said Bloomberg News.

Mpumi Sithole, spokeswoman for Amplats, said community members near the Limpopo province mine had intimidated motorists and blocked roads. Attendance had dropped since last week, she told Bloomberg News which said Mogalakwena was Amplats’ most profitable mine.

The South African Police Service arrested 36 protesters on charges of public violence and malicious damage to property while four people including a member of the Economic Freedom Fighters political party appeared in court on a charge of inciting violence, police spokeswoman Ronel Otto told Bloomberg.
