[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa’s minister of Water Affairs and Sanitation Nomvula Mokonyane has urged all mining houses to use water sparingly in their operations, said the South African Broadcasting Corporation.
This is in the wake of deepening water shortages across the country, particularly at the platinum belt in Rustenburg. World third largest platinum producer, Lonmin, which operates in the area, has revealed that it has halted irrigation and implemented water conservation programmes in its operations.
“Every mining company has water usage licenses. There are conditions that go with that license. Among those are water conservation and management,” said Mokonyane.
“So every mining house has to make sure that it does not only depend on additional supply, but also has systems to preserve water,” she said.
