SOUTH Africa’s mining sector was beset by the worst ever regulatory conditions during 2017, but there was hope the graft, corruption, and maladministration of the President Jacob Zuma era was drawing to a close, said BusinessLive citing comments by Roger Baxter, CEO of the country’s Chamber of Mines.

“The challenges in the regulatory environment in 2017 were arguably the worst the industry has ever experienced,” said Baxter at a press conference just before the opening of the Investing in Africa Mining Indaba 2018. “Immense damage” was done by the unilateral implementation of the third-iteration of the Mining Charter, he said.

Baxter was clear that the chamber would not talk to mines minister, Mosebenzi Zwane. “Zwane is not the right person to lead the department [of Mineral Resources],” he said.
