THE suspension of Transnet CEO, Siyabonga Gama, was imminent, said BusinessLive following confirmation that two other senior staff members at the state-owned logistics and freight firm had been suspended.

The publication said Pravin Gordhan, minister of public enterprises, the department to which Transnet reports, was likely to service notice of the suspension.

Thamsanqa Jiyane, chief officer of advanced manufacturing at Transnet Engineering, and Lindiwe Mdletshe, senior manager for strategic sourcing at Transnet Freight Rail, were served with official suspension letters on Thursday, following a special board meeting on Wednesday, said the publication.

The suspensions follow investigations by law firms Werksmans and MNS Attorneys, as well as the South Africa’s National Treasury, into allegations of impropriety linked to the R54bn purchase of locomotives from General Electric, Bombardier Transport, China South Rail and China North Rail, said BusinessLive.

Gama is expected to fight the suspension.
