[miningmx.com] – SIBANYE Gold said its Beatrix mine had restarted mining from the evening shift on February 9 following an agreement with rival unions regarding maintaining peace and security on the operation.
The company estimated a R23m total revenue loss representing some 1,600 ounces of gold from Beatrix’s North and South shafts. The suspension of mining followed violence between rival unions in which nine workers were injured.
Neal Froneman, CEO of Sibanye Gold, commended the unions – the National Union of Mineworkers and the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union – for reaching an agreement. “This mature attitude bodes well for the future of mining in South Africa’.
In terms of the agreement, Sibanye management would undertake an investigation in which unions would fully cooperate.
