Mnangagwa warns miners to respect environmental standards

Emmerson Mnangagwa, president, Zimbabwe

ZIMBABWE president, Emmerson Mnangagwa has urged mining companies operating in the southern Africa country to respect its environment by adopting best practice.

Speaking at the opening of a platinum group metal (PGM) exploration project being undertaken by Karo Platinum, and the government, Mnangagwa said that “… as we go forward, we want to exhort all investors and business ventures across all sectors of the economy to be sensitive to the environmental impact of our growing economy.

“I urge the mining companies to employ sustainable mining methods and adhere to environmental concerns as they carry out their mining activities,” he said. The Karo Platinum development could see the production of 1.4 million ounces a year of PGMs annually, and the construction of a refinery producing two million oz of PGMs a year.

The area on which Karo Platinum is exploring is estimated to contain 96 million oz at a projected resource grade of 3.2 grams per ton (g/t) on a 4E (platinum, palladium, rhodium and gold) basis.
